Back in the day, shoppers used to use special plans at the stores in order to purchase things like back-to-school items and Christmas presents. It was called a ?lay-a-way? system or a ?Christmas Club? program. The merchandise would remain at the store and the consumer would make payments on them until they were paid off at which time they could pick it up.

Then along came the credit cards and these programs fell out of favor.

Well, they?re coming back. Sears has announced its ?Christmas club? for 2010. You can set up a Christmas Club online or at most Sears stores.

So maybe now is the time to plan for a great Christmas and avoid that nasty debt hangover that shows up in January.
