Employment And Credit Checks, Again

And you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t.

If you are applying for a job and the employer requests a credit check, they can’t do it without your permission, however, if you don’t give your permission that could be the deal breaker right there. And if you have been out of a job for a while and consequently your finances have suffered and your credit report shows negative information that could also be the deal breaker.

So, like I said, “You’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t”.

And at this point in most states across the United States there is no real way out of this “Catch-22” dilemma.

The good news is that there are a few lawmakers out there who are trying to fix this destructive situation. U.S. Representative Steve Cohen (D., Tenn.) has proposed a bill to prohibit the use of credit checks during the hiring or firing process with certain exceptions. And there are a few states that have already passed laws to restrict employers’ use of credit checks.

But if you’ve ever watched the legislative process you know that the wheels move slowly, ever soooooo slow!

In the mean time, make sure that you know exactly what is showing on your credit report. Get your free copy from each of the major credit reporting bureaus and be ready to explain the whys and wherefores of how your bad credit happened.

If you’ve been unemployed for a while without the funds to pay your bills and your credit is now bad, there really was nothing else you could have done except perhaps have been more cognizant of the predictions of your crystal ball when you took out the credit in the first place, you know, back when you had a great job and the economy was good and everything was fine. You know, why didn’t you just see what would happen in the future and not get the loan?

Because, life doesn’t work out that way, but it usually does work out.

So do the best you can with what you’ve got. Explain your situation and hopefully you can manage.

And eventually, maybe, if all the stars get aligned and the two political parties can come together on some type of agreement, oh, oops, sorry, that is probably asking too much, yeah, I know that ain’t gonna happen, but maybe, just maybe the unfair practice of employers checking credit reports, with the exception of those few jobs where it really may be pertinent, will fall by the wayside.
