Consumer Credit And Negative Credit Reports

by Karen on January 19, 2010

Over the past year the consumer credit market has stalled. The current recession and economic conditions has severely curtailed lending. Part of this is of course the fact that banks and lending institutions have cracked down and they are no longer lending money as freely as before.

However, another issue that is affecting the lending situation and will continue to affect it for some time to come is the fact that so many consumers now have bad credit. The economy has affected regular people from main street USA in the form of job losses, rising foreclosures and repossessions and credit card and loan delinquencies. The fact is that there are now millions of Americans who have watched their perfect credit records that they worked for years to build be destroyed in the falling economy.

The question now becomes “how long will these black marks on credit reports continue to haunt consumers?” In the past, many of these negative marks would have affected the consumer for years to come and that may as well be the case right now also. The difference this time is that now there are more people in negative credit situations than ever before in recent history.

Consumer credit has been falling at a steady pace and while it may partially be attributed to the fact that consumers are reducing their debt loads, it may also be an indication of a decline in personal spending. Personal spending and the flow of money from individuals to businesses for goods and services is actually what propels the economy. Without appropriate spending and money being put back into the economy the recession will continue.

So many consumers are now wondering how much and how long the negative and derogatory marks on their credit reports will affect them. If history is repeated, the fact is that the negative and derogatory information on credit reports can have a negative impact for as long as 7 years.

However, the longer it has been since the problem the less the derogatory marks will affect you. Time heals all credit problems. There are also some credit repair techniques that can help the situation sooner rather than later. It is also important for individuals to step out of their fear and start over again. Start rebuilding credit lines. You can get a secured credit card with a deposit and there are also many other ways to start building credit. Have the credit available but be wary of using it.

The recession will not last forever and a good economy is in everyone’s future. If you have had problems caused from the recent downturn, now is the time to engage in credit repair techniques and credit repair plans so that you are able to borrow money in the future for the things that you need.
